Most Important CAT Quant Topics for CAT 2026, Ranked by 9 Years of Papers
26 Oct 2026 · 6 min read
Most "important topics" lists are someone's memory of a few papers. This one is counted. We tagged every Quant question CAT released from 2017–2025, 612 questions over 24 slot-papers, by chapter, and scaled each year to today's 22-question section.
The top 10
| # | Chapter | Area | Questions per section | Papers asked in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Quadratic & Polynomial Equations | Algebra | 1.7 | 23 of 24 |
| 2 | Progressions & Series | Algebra | 1.5 | 24 of 24 |
| 3 | Time & Work | Arithmetic | 1.3 | 22 of 24 |
| 4 | Inequalities & Modulus | Algebra | 1.3 | 21 of 24 |
| 5 | Averages | Arithmetic | 1.3 | 23 of 24 |
| 6 | Quadrilaterals & Polygons | Geometry | 1.3 | 21 of 24 |
| 7 | Time, Speed & Distance | Arithmetic | 1.1 | 23 of 24 |
| 8 | Exponents & Surds | Algebra | 1.1 | 20 of 24 |
| 9 | Mixtures & Alligation | Arithmetic | 1.1 | 22 of 24 |
| 10 | Triangles | Geometry | 1 | 17 of 24 |
The top five, Quadratic & Polynomial Equations, Progressions & Series, Time & Work, Inequalities & Modulus, Averages, add up to about 7.1 of 22 questions. The top ten cover about 12.7. That is the core of the section, and it is where an hour of study buys the most marks.
What the ranking says
Algebra and Arithmetic are level. Arithmetic: about 8.2 questions a section. Algebra: about 8.1 questions a section. Geometry: about 3.1 questions a section. Number System: about 1.5 questions a section. Modern Maths: about 1 question a section. If you have been treating Algebra as optional because it feels harder, the numbers say otherwise: Quadratic & Polynomial Equations, Progressions & Series, Inequalities & Modulus are among the most reliably asked chapters in the whole paper.
Consistency matters as much as weight. Quadratic & Polynomial Equations turned up in 23 of 24 papers. A chapter that appears in nearly every paper is a safer bet than one that is heavy in a single year and missing the next.
The long tail is thin. Digits & Number Properties, Circles, Coordinate Geometry, Remainders & Divisibility, Set Theory, Mensuration each average under half a question a section. Learn their formula sheets for a quick win, but don't spend a week on them now.
How to use this
- Start at the top of the table and work down. Stop going deeper into a chapter once you can solve its standard question types reliably; move to the next.
- Check yourself on questions, not on reading. Knowing a chapter means getting fresh questions right, under time.
- Keep the formula sheets close. Every chapter in the table links to a free one.
The ranking is a guide to effort, not a prediction. CAT can and does surprise. But nine years of papers is the best evidence there is about where the marks have been.
