APs, GPs, recurrences and series that telescope.

Progressions & Series formula sheet

Everything CAT needs from Progressions & Series, in one place. Bookmark it for revision; the lesson in the app explains where each line comes from and when to reach for it.

Everything for this chapter, in one place. aa is the first term, dd the common difference, rr the common ratio, ll the last term, nn the number of terms.

Arithmetic progression — add the same dd each time

nnth termtn=a+(n−1)dt_n = a + (n-1)d
SumSn=n2[2a+(n−1)d]S_n = \dfrac{n}{2}\left[2a + (n-1)d\right]
Sum, when you know the last termSn=n2(a+l)S_n = \dfrac{n}{2}(a + l)
Term, from the sumtn=Sn−Sn−1t_n = S_n - S_{n-1}
Number of termsn=l−ad+1n = \dfrac{l-a}{d} + 1
Average of the whole APa+l2\dfrac{a+l}{2}, which is the middle term
Three terms in AP2b=a+c2b = a + c

Picking terms symmetrically — kills the algebra when a sum is given

3 termsa−d,  a,  a+da-d,\; a,\; a+d
4 termsa−3d,  a−d,  a+d,  a+3da-3d,\; a-d,\; a+d,\; a+3d — note the common difference is 2d2d
5 termsa−2d,  a−d,  a,  a+d,  a+2da-2d,\; a-d,\; a,\; a+d,\; a+2d

Geometric progression — multiply by the same rr each time

nnth termtn=arn−1t_n = ar^{n-1}
SumSn=a(rn−1)r−1S_n = \dfrac{a(r^n - 1)}{r - 1}, for r≠1r \neq 1
Infinite sumS∞=a1−rS_\infty = \dfrac{a}{1-r}, only when ∣r∣<1\lvert r \rvert < 1
Three terms in GPb2=acb^2 = ac
Arithmetico-geometric∑(a+kd)rk=a1−r+dr(1−r)2\sum (a+kd)r^k = \dfrac{a}{1-r} + \dfrac{dr}{(1-r)^2}, for ∣r∣<1\lvert r \rvert < 1

Means

HPthe reciprocals form an AP — there is no HP sum formula

Standard sums — worth knowing cold

Telescoping — when a sum collapses

Products of consecutive AP termstktk+1=tktk+1tk+2−tk−1tktk+13dt_k t_{k+1} = \dfrac{t_k t_{k+1} t_{k+2} - t_{k-1} t_k t_{k+1}}{3d}

The 6 Progressions & Series question types CAT repeats

Past CAT papers return to the same few shapes. Learn to recognise them and most questions become a known routine. Beyond these, CAT has asked 11 rarer one-off shapes here.

  1. 01

    A recurrence — unroll it, or find the cycle

  2. 02

    The sum is handed to you as a formula

  3. 03

    A geometric series, usually infinite

  4. 04

    Two facts about an AP, find aa and dd

  5. 05

    It telescopes

  6. 06

    Terms common to two APs

Progressions & Series in CAT: quick answers

How many Progressions & Series questions come in CAT Quant?
About 1.5 questions in a 22-question Quant section, worth roughly 5 marks. Progressions & Series appeared in 24 of the 24 CAT papers from 2017 to 2025, 41 questions in all, which ranks it 2 of 25 Quant chapters.
Are Progressions & Series questions in CAT MCQ or TITA?
22% of the Progressions & Series questions asked since 2017 were TITA (type in the answer, no negative marking). The rest were multiple choice.
What types of Progressions & Series questions does CAT ask?
CAT keeps returning to 6 question shapes in Progressions & Series: A recurrence — unroll it, or find the cycle; The sum is handed to you as a formula; A geometric series, usually infinite; Two facts about an AP, find a and d; It telescopes; Terms common to two APs.
