Everything for this chapter, in one place. Throughout, N=paqbrc⋯N = p^a q^b r^c \cdots is the prime factorisation.

Counting divisors

Number of divisors(a+1)(b+1)(c+1)⋯(a+1)(b+1)(c+1)\cdots
Sum of divisorspa+1−1p−1×qb+1−1q−1×⋯\dfrac{p^{a+1}-1}{p-1} \times \dfrac{q^{b+1}-1}{q-1} \times \cdots
Product of divisorsN d/2N^{\,d/2}, where dd is the number of divisors
Perfect-square divisorscount only the even exponents: (⌊a2⌋+1)(⌊b2⌋+1)⋯\left(\lfloor\frac{a}{2}\rfloor+1\right)\left(\lfloor\frac{b}{2}\rfloor+1\right)\cdots
Perfect-cube divisorsthe same with multiples of 3

What a divisor count tells you

Exactly 2 divisorsa prime
Exactly 3 divisorsp2p^2
Exactly 4 divisorsp3p^3 or pqpq
Exactly dd divisorsevery way of writing dd as a product gives an exponent pattern
dd is oddexactly when NN is a perfect square

Factor pairs

Pairs (a,b)(a,b) with ab=Nab = N and a≤ba \le b⌈d2⌉\left\lceil \dfrac{d}{2} \right\rceil
x2−y2=Nx^2 - y^2 = Nfactor NN as (x−y)(x+y)(x-y)(x+y); both factors must share parity
1a+1b=1k\dfrac{1}{a}+\dfrac{1}{b} = \dfrac{1}{k}rearranges to (a−k)(b−k)=k2(a-k)(b-k) = k^2
Any "product equals a constant"list the factor pairs, including negative ones when integers are allowed

Divisibility

If kk divides AA and BBkk divides every mA+nBmA + nB
Count up to nn divisible by aa⌊na⌋\left\lfloor \dfrac{n}{a} \right\rfloor
Divisible by none of a,b,ca,b,cinclusion–exclusion on the counts
Highest power of a prime pp in n!n!⌊np⌋+⌊np2⌋+⋯\left\lfloor\frac{n}{p}\right\rfloor + \left\lfloor\frac{n}{p^2}\right\rfloor + \cdots

Matching exponents

mn=paqbm^n = p^a q^bnn must divide every exponent, so n∣gcd⁡(a,b)n \mid \gcd(a,b)
Smallest nn with A∣BnA \mid B^ntake the worst prime: n=max⁡⌈neededavailable⌉n = \max\lceil \frac{\text{needed}}{\text{available}} \rceil
Largest integer dividing a familytest the first two or three members and take their gcd
